Where does the time go?

Tonight as I put my kids to bed we had to set the alarm... for 6:50am!!! It's mixed feelings here.

I love seasons, love the anticipation of the change in weather we experience here in New York. Summer is always the most welcome, schools out, layers off, BBQ's - what's not to love? Autumn offers fresh air and the gorgeous colors of the changing leaves. Winter with it's quiet still air and Spring with the rebirth of the trees. Year after year we never tire of it.

But I didn't mean to get philosophical.

I just wanted to ask "where does the time go?"

And since I've been getting some demanding email... I wanted to share a couple of cute ones.

Summer days

The kids are back from camp, most people are getting in the 'school' mode, but not me, my vacation begins tomorrow morning, we depart for Ft Lauderdale. I work all summer but I block out the 2 weeks before school to chill with the family. So leave me a message, I will get back to you asap. There are just a couple spots left for Tuesday, September 8, the last summer special for Summer '09.

August is a very busy time for me, summer is a great time to schedule family sessions and I'm lovin' it. I meet great kids - so much personality and so intelligent - I feel lucky to hang out with them even if it's for about an hour. But all this does mean I don't have as much time to update my blog, it will be coming soon... Stay tuned...

I couldn't post one of the cousins without posting the other. As the 5th child from a family of 7 I know all about 'being fair'. It still amazes me how each portrait tells a story, in these individuals you can see their personality shine thru.

Last week Thursday I took a drive south to Lakewood, NJ and spend a couple of hours with these wonderful talented children. They didn't just hang out of the window, they also played the piano & saxophone and introduced me to their pet parakeet, loads of FUN!

Let me just say that this first image was the first capture I got from the session, I was ready to send them home, after all, we got 'THE' shot - the one that will look amazing on the wall and gifts for the grandparents (even the one in Lawrence reading this), but we filled rest of the time with stuff that will make their 5x5 proof album so much fun to look at for many years to come.

I'm definitely dating myself here, but I'm just fine with that (kinda, sorta). Daniel's Mom made me an aunt (yes, she is my niece - occasionally I take photos of family members) and now little Daniel made me a great aunt. On it's own - great aunt is fine place to be, but all my great aunts seemed so old, spoke a foreign language - Hungarian, fed me every time I visited and best of all planted wet kisses on my cheeks. I miss them all, they have all passed on.

Here are some portraits from my visit in April to Los Angeles, CA. I know I'm jumping around here a bit, some of you might be waiting for the Mother's Day photos which are coming soon.....

My visit to Los Angeles was one big adrenaline rush. I left NY on Sunday morning to arrive in Burbank, CA Sunday afternoon at 11:30am. My first appointment was at 12:30. Get my bags, get my car, stop at my aunts to change and freshen up and off to the shoot. I was a bit late but I build the time in to my schedule. From the time I started until 7pm it was work, work, moving non-stop. Finally when I was done that last session I just collapsed - drained from head to toe. Keeping on NY time I was up 4am the next morning, had a session scheduled for 8:30 and from there went until the last session which ended about 6pm. Again drained.

Then came the BEST part. The 'what am I going to do today?' part.

I don't remember where I read about the Getty Museum but I knew that I read something and made a mental note to myself that the next time I'm in LA I should check it out. Lucky for me my aunt Faige was free and we went together. What perfect antidote to the whirlwind I had just come out of. The museum lays on top of the hill in Brentwood, you need to take a trolly up the mountain, the layout is just extraordinary, all white jerusalem stone, built with open frames everywhere, every turn you take is a completely new view, breathtaking serenity - and that was just the outside. After that I stopped by The Grove, you can't go to LA and NOT go to The Grove and got gifts for the kids.

Then it's back home - and this is really the REAL BEST part - I drove up to my house at 5:45am and my son, Dovid comes running out to greet me. He is definitely one of the best huggers EVER. All the kids were wide awake and excited to see me and loving their gifts and I was ready for a nap. So it goes.

Can't wait to go back!!!

Cotton Candy - Monsey Children's Photographer

I was recently asked how I get my ideas. That's a great questions with no single answer. In this case I had 3 gorgeous sisters, their hair done up beautifully and I knew I wanted a soulful feel to the portrait. I started by positioning them all together and tilting them this way or that way (they were great sports about it!!). I felt something was missing and wanted to wrap them all in a bow but couldn't figure out how to make that 'work'. I grabbed for the tulle (sp?) and started wrapping them, I told Ruti, the youngest that she was being wrapped in cotton candy, she loved that. In the 'darkroom' (aka photoshop) I finished the look by making it black and white except for the headbands. This method of select coloring is something I avoid overdoing and in this instance I think it works.

Together with professional makeup artist, Oorah (845) 362-7777 and professional hair and makeup artist, Naama (845) 222-5915, and a beautiful and scruptious buffet set up by Chanie of Wholesome Gourmet (wholesomegourmetfoods@gmail).com, we created a marvelous Mother's Day. One of the Mother's, already a grandmother, told me on her way out that it was her best Mother's Day EVER!

It was an amazing synergy, the makeup done, the hair done, the portraits done and then settling in for a food. At the end of the day we were all ZONKED, but we felt so good.

We all enjoyed the day so much that we are committed to doing this again next year.

Big thanks to Oorah, Naama, Chanie and Baila for partnering with me on this, you are all so amazing and talented!!

Purim '09

We had a beautiful Purim! My boys were 'cops and gangster' theme, representing both sides of the law. Our good friend, Moshe R, the COOLEST guy on Southgate Drive came by on his motorcycle, ever resourceful I asked if my boys can get on for a snap, the boys were thrilled!

Naava was a princess. Promise I didn't tell Naava to pose that way, I had something else in mind, but she insisted on the chaise and did her thing. She has a lot of ideas!!! (I can tell you about the one she is planning for the summer that involves feathers). Ruthy was a fairy, the wings were just gorgeous, we had a lot of fun with them.

I had a lot of fun using graphics, something I usually avoid in my standard portraits since I feel it gets in the way of self expression, but these images were just begging to be played around with.

The custom of waiting until a boy is 3 years before cutting his hear is a wonderfully spiritual affair. According to Kabballah a boy is like a tree, in following the tradition not to eat fruit from a tree the first 3 years, symbolically some do not cut the boys hair until the third birthday.
Shmuel is the only boy in this family of 4 girls and I got to document the whole day. Here are some snapshots.

I love walking into your house and using your props and furniture to make your image uniquely yours. I recommend that every new born baby have their photo taken before 2 weeks for that fresh, wrinkled look that last so short but should be remembered for eternity.

Anyone who has been to my studio has seen the serious drum set my husband has. It has been a source of bribery for many boys (and girls) to co-operate and then they will get to hit a few. Little Shmuel is adorable and friendly, but he got very tired, the only thing that calmed him down was the much smaller but just as fun bongos.

I just got back from a short trip I took to our capitol, Washington DC. I am sitting here with all the submissions and just overwhelmed by it all. A Tribute To Gavriel and Rivky Holzberg - Mumbai, India

Since Thursday I have been walking around with a heavy heart. At first I was hoping for the best, then grateful to see little Moishe come out of the hell that the terrorist have created and finally just numb to realize that this young couple have perished senselessly.

I received this email, in memory of Gavriel and Rivky Holzberg and felt the need to share it. I mostly deal with happy occasions, celebrations and wonderful memories in my photography. Photographs are what remain as proof of those special times. Hillary never thought that these images would be used under these circumstances.

This tribute was written by Hillary Lewin who spent the summer in India doing research.

Many of you first heard of the Holtzberg family three days ago when news of the Mumbai hostage situation emerged. I feel compelled to write this letter, because I want the world to know who Rivky and Gabi Holtzberg were in life and to tell you what I witnessed of their accomplishments in their brief 28 years on earth. While I am devastated by their death, I am thankful that my life and so many others were touched by their purity, friendship and spirit.

Before I entered the Chabad house in Mumbai, I thought, "What kind of people would leave a comfortable and secure life in a religious community to live in the middle of Mumbai; a dirty, difficult, crowded city?" As I got to know Rivky and Gabi over the course of this past summer, I understood that G-d creates some truly special people willing to devote their lives to bettering the world.

I was first welcomed by Rivky, who had a big smile on her face and her baby Moishie in her arms. She ushered me and my fellow travelers into the Chabad house and immediately offered us something to eat and a sofa to rest on. We quickly became good friends. We bonded with the Holtzberg family and the staff at Chabad, including Sandra, the heroine who saved baby Moishie's life.

Like his parents, Moishe is a sweet, loving, happy baby. He was so attached to Rivky and Gabi. He got so excited to sing Shabbat Z'mirot (songs) every Friday night with his father, and I could tell by the light on Gabi's face when they were singing together, that he looked forward to it too. It breaks my heart that I can still hear Moishie's voice calling, "Ima, Ima, Ima", and she will no longer be able to hold him or rock him in her arms.

On my second Shabbat at Chabad, Rivky told me there were two Israeli men staying at the house who were just released from an Indian prison. When I saw these men sitting at the dinner table, I was startled. One man had only a front tooth and a raggedy pony tail, and the other looked like an Israeli version of Rambo. I observed the way that Gabi interacted with them and how they were welcomed at the Shabbat table the same way everyone else was, and my fears melted away. Over the course of the night, I learned that these men were not the only prisoners or ex-convicts the Holtzberg's helped. Gabi frequently brought Kosher meals to Israelis in prison, spent time with them, listened to their life stories, and took them in after their release.

I realized that Gabi and Rivky's job was not only to run a Chabad house and provide warm meals and beds for weary Jewish travelers, it was much greater. The Holtzberg's were running a remarkable operation. They took their jobs as shlichim (emissaries) very seriously. Their lives never stopped. There was no such thing as "personal space" or "downtime". The phones rang constantly, people came in and out like a subway station, and all the while Rivky and Gabi were calm, smiling, warm, and welcomed everyone like family.

Rivky spent each day cooking dinner with the chefs for 20-40 people, while Gabi made sure to provide meat for everyone by going to the local markets and schechting (koshering) chickens himself. They also provided travelers with computers for internet access, so that they wouldn't have to pay for internet cafes. They even took care of our laundry. Having spent much time abroad, it was clear to me that Rivky and Gabi were unusual tzadikim (righteous people).

On my last Shabbat in India, I slept in Rivky and Gabi's home, the 5th floor of the Chabad house. I noticed that their apartment was dilapidated and bare. They had only a sofa, a bookshelf, a bedroom for Moishie, and a bedroom to sleep in. The paint peeled from the walls, and there were hardly any decorations. Yet, the guest quarters on the two floors below were decorated exquisitely, with American-style beds, expansive bathrooms, air conditioning (a luxury in India) and marble floors. We called these rooms our "healing rooms" because life was so difficult in Mumbai during the week. We knew that when we came to Chabad, Rivky and Gabi would take care of us just like our parents, and their openness and kindness would rejuvenate us for the week to come.

The juxtaposition of their home to the guest rooms was just another example of what selfless, humble people Rivky and Gabi were. They were more concerned about the comfort of their guests than their own.

The Holtzberg's Shabbat table was a new experience each week. Backpackers, businessmen, diplomats and diamond dealers gathered together to connect with their heritage in an otherwise unfamiliar city. We always knew we were in for a surprise where an amazing story would be told, either by Gabi or a guest at the table. For each meal, Gabi prepared about seven different divrei torah (words of torah) to share. Though most of them were delivered in Hebrew (and I caught about 25%), his wisdom, knowledge and ability to inspire amazed me. Rivky and Gabi were accepting of everyone who walked through their doors, and they had no hidden agendas. Rivky once told me that there was one holiday where they had no guests. It was just herself, Gabi and Moishie. I expected her to say how relieved she was not to have guests, but she told me it was, in fact, the only lonely holiday they ever spent in India.

I remember asking Gabi if he was afraid of potential terror threats. Although his demeanor was so sweet and gentle, Gabi was also very strong-minded and determined. He told me simply and sharply that if the terrorists were to come, "be my guest, because I'm not leaving this place." Both he and Rivky believed that their mission in Mumbai was far greater than any potential terror threats.

Everything Rivky and Gabi did came from their dedication, love and commitment to the Jewish people and to G-d. I cannot portray in words how remarkable this couple was. If there is anything practical that I can suggest in order to elevate their souls, please try to light candles this Friday night for Shabbat, improve relationships with family members and friends, try to connect to others the way that Rivky and Gabi did- with love, acceptance and open arms. There is so much to learn from them. May their names and influence live on, and inspire us in acts of kindness and love.

Orh V'Daas is the only Special Ed school in Rockland County that services children with special needs. Bald Head Island, NC

In September I had the pleasure of going to Bald Head Island, NC for a seminar on photography. Bald Head Island is best known as the location for the movie 'Cape Fear' with Robert De Niro. The Island is remote - I took a plane to Wilmington, NC (best known as the location for Dawson's Creek series), a shuttle to the Ferry which took me to a tram that brought me to an adorable beach house. The house included bikes and golf carts since there are only a limited amount of cars allowed on the island.

I spent 3 days learning from 4 amazing photographers. I enjoyed spending time with my colleagues, discussing everything photographic. It all came to a quick end when we got word that a hurricane was heading our way. Let me tell you that rolling grey clouds on a small island really puts a prospective on things. Boy did we evacuate quickly.

Here are a couple of shots, I didn't get enough photos of the Island, due to the early departure (I was suppose to spend the last day relaxing and photographing, instead I went 6 hrs early on standby).

Below is yours truly, I gave my camera to a colleague while waiting for the ferry and 2 adorable models.

There was so much going on in the past few weeks. Now that the kids are back in school I am back full time catching up on my August work. I had a great variety of work and I love that - it keeps me from getting stale.

Family Reunions

These are the trickiest to work. A couple of families, multi-generational and throw in lots of little (unpredictable) kids. It seems daunting and almost impossible. These families however proved the opposite. They were a pleasure from the start to finish. I love seeing the bonds between cousins, one puts on music the others run to dance along, get some sticks out and you have a game of belts. These activities are ageless and timeless, perfect for everyone.

Every member of the family got a T-shirt souvenir.

Celebrating the 50th Anniversary with almost all their kids, grandkids and great-grandkids.

Sometimes the session is booked just 'because' - there is no special occasion coming up but your kid(s) are so cute and you want to capture them before they jump into the next stage. Sometimes there is a reason, like Akiva, he came for his pre-Upshern photos, he will be 3 in 2 months and he will be getting his first ever haircut. Since the Upshern is a traditional ceremony I usually start out with the classic photos, giving it a timeless feel. Then I move to more casual and even sporty, depending on the individual taste and personality of the family involved.

Here Akiva is still very wary of me, I try to capture his curiosity. I love the serious look.

The symbolism of the haircut is the start of his wearing a Kippah, I integrate some religious aspects like the Torah and the Siddur.

Here you can see him starting to warm up.

Now he's really hot! He decides to try on the rug and that give me a chance to get the unplanned shot of him doing his thing.

Takes a quick ride on an antique bike I have in my studio. This bike is at least 75 yrs old, a friend salvaged it from a construction site and I have it on loan.

Now he's really tired, he takes his blankie and cuddles a bit and we call it a day.

For Upshern photos I recommend you schedule your appointment for 8 weeks prior to the haircut date.

This was not good since last year I had a scheduled appointment with these 2 gorgeous young ladies but had to reschedule. I really didn't want to push it off another year! Glad we got together before the crazy lightening storm.

The only appointments currently available PRIOR* to October 5th is the September 5th Summer Special. For the Summer Special there are just a couple of slots available.

I am accepting appointments for October and November. There is an average 6 week wait for appointments so keep it in mind when you are calling to schedule an appointment. Autumn is a gorgeous time for outdoor photos as well as studio photos.

In the summer we venture out into our gardens. What better way to celebrate a Bas Mitzvah than in the garden with family and friends.

July Summer Special

This past Friday was the July Summer Special. Some were families were returning from last year (some with new additions), some of you were first timers. I enjoyed it tremendously. The synergy was a bit chaotic but I work well in that environment. I came home exhausted but feeling really good about the shoot. I think some of the parents are going to be pretty surprised that not only do I have a decent photo, it's a real special photo that will be treasured for many years.

For those of you that are interested in booking the summer special there is only ONE more date available, Sunday, August 3. It's the first Sunday of the 'Nine Days' and I figured most of us won't be planning much - but this is a fun highlight to what might otherwise be a boring day.
